Book Review: Accidentally a Dragon Shifter

From the “Back of the book”:

“She said “yes” to the proposal
She didn’t expect the dragons.

When Kelley’s carefree boyfriend Anthony Salamandras pops the question, she figures it must be a joke.

Nope. He’s serious. And he’s a dragon shifter.

Thanks to a quick abduction and transformation on his planet, so is she.

Kelley didn’t sign up for this. But she has her own allies.

And she’s gonna show him just what the daughter of a vacuum cleaner repairman is made of.

A light-hearted urban fantasy novella duology with romcom vibes a la My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Perfect quick read with a derpy alpha and a gamer/mythology nerd. Low PG-13 with a bit of mild language, some innuendo, and some kissing.

This is a completed novella duology”

My Thoughts:

First, when this says “novella duology”… it ain’t kidding. Both books are really short, and part of the same story. (Not that that’s a bad thing… as long as you know what you’re getting. Personally, I’d prefer if they were wrapped into one book. I think it’s a duology for sales reasons though. Series tend to sell better. Anyway…)
So yeah, buy both books at the same time.

The story starts out as the typical YA trope (Hey, I’m really a dragon, and when I kissed you, that means we’re married!)

What I like about this series, is that it takes that trope, and turns it on it’s head. The girl says no, and goes back home. And, instead of brooding or kidnapping her (like you’d see in most books with this trope…) the guy is all “Oops, I messed up. But I really love you, so what do I have to do to court you according to your culture.” (I’m paraphrasing there, but you know….)

So the rest of the book is a combo of Kelley getting used to her new dragon powers, them dating and getting to know each other better, and, in the second book, planning the wedding while proving to the guy’s crazy mom that Kelly is worthy of both him, and becoming a dragon. (Don’t want to spoil it too much, but yeah, his mom is messed up. She does get justice in the end…)

This book is a fun urban fantasy rom-com. If you’re looking for serious Fantasy (with a capital F)… you’re barking up the wrong tree. On the other hand, if you want a fun read, a twist on a trope, with fun characters that have a lot more realist reactions than you’re typical YA rom-com protagonist, (and even a cameo or two from some of Janeen’s other books) then you’ll love this series.
